Beausoleil First Nation delays election for at least six months – simcoe.com

Community poll didn’t support June election due to coronavirus concerns

Beausoleil First Nation will not be holding a June election as expected due to safety concerns around the coronavirus.

The results of a poll of the entire membership conducted April 24-28 supported a delay in the election for a six-month period.

Of the 233 respondents, 127 voted no to a June election and 106 voted yes.

“It was a really close vote,” said Joseph Stup, communications director for the First Nation.

The current council’s term under Chief Guy Monague, which was set to expire July 5, will continue. Council will make a decision in November to call an election, or it could be postponed for another six months if there are continuing concerns around COVID-19 , explained Stup.
