City of Thunder Bay: Live on the Waterfront to Close with Welcome to New Students

The City of Thunder Bay’s last Live on the Waterfront of the season invites the entire community in welcoming new students to Thunder Bay with an exciting evening of excellent music and a fireworks finale on Wednesday, Aug. 29 in Marina Park.

Closing out the entertainment for the most successful Live on the Waterfront series to date is Juno Award winner DJ Shub. Formerly in A Tribe Called Red, DJ Shub is a title-earning DJ and award-winning music producer. Born in Grand River, Ontario and currently living in Fort Erie, he holds two DMC Canada DJ Championship titles (2007 and 2008), a DMC Canadian Battle for Supremacy title (2008), a Canadian Red Bull Thre3style title (2012) and a King of the Dot Canada vs. USA DJ battle win. In addition, he holds trophies from the Juno Awards and the Aboriginal Peoples’ Choice Music Awards as some of his most notable accomplishments. This year, his album PowWowStep was nominated for a Juno in the Indigenous Music Album of the Year category. Two professional dancers will accompany the award-winning DJ.

Joining DJ Shub for the final show will be Iskwé. Bridging cross-cultural aesthetics and exploring her own struggle both to fit into and to breakaway from modern Western archetypes has been an important part of Iskwé’s artistic vision since the release of her WCMA nominated self-titled debut album in late 2013. Her debut single “Nobody Knows,” produced by Juno Award nominees The Darcys and featured in the Netflix series Between, captivated audiences by turning a stark spotlight on the more than 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. Iskwé won at the 2017 West Coast Music Awards (WCMA) for Electronic/Dance Artist of the Year. Her 2017 album The Fight Within recently received a Juno nomination for Indigenous Music Album of The Year and in this year she was longlisted for the 2018 Polaris Music Prize.

Also on the OPG Community Stage next Wednesday night is Siedd, a Thunder Bay resident singer.

The Live on the Waterfront finale, presented by Ontario Power Generation and funded in part by the Government of Ontario, runs 6 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday in Marina Park. Admission is free.
