City councillor Kelly Fehr wants Vernon to adopt anti-racism policy

A local politician wants more policy created to tackle racism.

Vernon city councillor Kelly Fehr will be putting forward a motion at the next council meeting directing city staff to draft an Anti-Racial Discrimination and Anti-Racism Policy. It would compliment the city’s Bullying and Harassment Policy which is already in place.

Fehr brought the notice of motion forth in the June 22 meeting. It focuses on combating systemic racism and discrimination.

“Canada, along with its provinces and territories, has an exceptional system of human rights laws and ratified international treaties,” reads the motion’s rational. “Nevertheless, as in other parts of the world, racism and discrimination continue to raise barriers against the development of individuals and groups.”
