Membertou – Winnipeg – Whitehorse Host 2020 APTN Indigenous Day Live Celebrations Across Canada

Press Release

March 3, 2020, Winnipeg, Man. – National Indigenous Peoples Day is fast approaching, and that can mean only one thing: APTN Indigenous Day Live (IDL) is almost here!

On Saturday, June 20, APTN will host the 14th edition of IDL for the very first time in a First Nation community: Membertou First Nation in Nova Scotia. IDL will also be returning to Winnipeg, Man., and Whitehorse, Yukon. Free daytime celebrations and evening concerts, which will be broadcast live on APTN, will take place in all three locations. The multi-platform broadcast will air on APTN from 7:30 p.m.–12 a.m. ET on June 20.

IDL will be held in Winnipeg at The Forks, a historical Indigenous gathering place. Once again, Whitehorse will host IDL at Shipyards Park, along the Yukon River. Meanwhile, audiences in Membertou will be treated to a Mawio’mi and Membertou homecoming in the form of music and art on the Membertou Powwow Grounds.

This year, IDL will commemorate and celebrate Manitoba’s 150th anniversary. IDL’s grand opening number will pay tribute to the Métis founders of Manitoba and the First Nations Peoples who originally inhabited the province prior to European settlement.
APTN is proud to present this edition of APTN Indigenous Day Live and would like to acknowledge its partners and funders: the Government of Canada, Membertou First Nation, the Province of Nova Scotia, The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, City of Whitehorse, NVD LP, TD Bank Group, Air North, ATCO Electric Yukon, BMO Bank of Montreal, Destination Cape Breton, Northwestel, Manitoba Hydro, Nova Scotia Power, Whitehorse Motors/Budget Car Rental and Yukon Energy.

The generous financial support from the Government of Canada has allowed IDL to expand its efforts and reach more Canadians in recent years. In addition, the Government of Canada’s continued involvement enables APTN to bring people and communities closer together. Thanks to this support, the network can continue to shine a spotlight on Indigenous cultures and celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of Indigenous Peoples with all Canadians.
