NB Government: Teachers to participate in cultural immersion camp

Press Release

13 July 2018

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government is working with the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre at the University of New Brunswick to host a Wolastoqey cultural immersion camp for teachers.

“Your government supports the promotion of First Nations perspectives, language, history and culture in our provincial curriculum,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “This camp will allow teachers to immerse themselves in Wolastoqey culture and gain new perspectives and experiences that they can take back to the classroom.”

More than 30 teachers from the Anglophone West and Anglophone South school districts will attend the camp, which is being hosted by the centre and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Office of First Nation Education.

“We appreciate the interest demonstrated by teachers who have requested to participate in this worthwhile initiative,” said David Perley, director of the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre. “These teachers recognize the need to enhance their understanding and knowledge of Wolastoqey history, treaty rights, language, world views, traditions, contributions and ancestral teachings.”

Teachers will have the opportunity to attend sunrise and sweat lodge ceremonies, participate in a basket-making workshop, take a boat tour narrated by an elder from the St. Mary’s First Nation, visit the Tobique First Nation and tour the burial mounds, and participate in a talking circle with former students of residential schools.

The government’s 10-year education plans aim to improve educational outcomes and better prepare young people for the future. They set objectives in priority areas to create lifelong learners, support educational leaders and bring stability to the system. One of the objectives in the plans is to meet the needs of First Nations learners and ensure that provincial curriculum reflects First Nations history and culture.
