Following an autopsy, the Saskatchewan Coroner’s office has confirmed the identity of a man whose body was found in a burnt-out car on a First Nation west of Prince Albert.

The deceased is Brennan Ahenakew, 20, of the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, an RCMP news release said on Wednesday.

Police first learned of the burning vehicle on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation on the morning of May 10, but the officer who attended the scene did not search the vehicle at that time. Later that afternoon, police received two reports of a missing person and then about a half-hour later, at 5:30 p.m., they were told the vehicle “possibly contained human remains.”

Shellbrook RCMP members returned to the scene and confirmed there were human remains in the vehicle.
