Run raises funds for trades-based youth programs – The Whig Standard

July 16, 2018

A local non-profit is continuing to gain headway in its hopes of empowering Indigenous youth.

Focus Forward for Indigenous Youth, a Kingston start up launched in May 2017, held its second annual 5 km run/walk at City Park on Saturday afternoon in efforts to raise funds for trades-based youth educational programs.

The organization works with Indigenous communities to render underprivileged youth — who often face systemic challenges such as underfunded schooling, increased suicide rates, and scarce educational resources — equitable access to opportunities.

Evan Veryard, founder and chairman of Focus Forward, said hosting the 5 km run presents more of an engaging “sense of community” than what a typical sit-down, educationally geared event would garner.

“We get a lot of good support every year,” Veryard, who’s also chemical engineering graduate student at RMC, said about the event. “Participants learn a little bit about the organization through the event, and from there, you get lots of good ideas that help us. You also meet lots of potential collaborators and team members.”
