Sacred fire in St. Catharines honours Gord Downie’s indigenous work – Niagara News

Residents of Niagara gathered around a sacred fire in honour of Gord Downie on Oct. 18 to celebrate his work in raising awareness for the indigenous community.

Fred Bowering kept the fire from the early morning, all the way to the end of the night behind the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre (PAC).

The gathering was scheduled after the Gord’s Legacy event at the PAC where Tragically Hip cover bands sang tribute songs for residents missing the artist.

Downie, who died last year, was the lead singer of the famous Canadian band Tragically Hip. He also campaigned for aboriginal rights across the country.
