Tsilhqot’in Nation Commends Williams Lake Indian Band on Supreme Court of Canada Victory

Press Release

February 7, 2018, Williams Lake, B.C: The Tsilhqot’in National Government commends the Williams Lake Indian Band on their recent Supreme Court of Canada victory that affirmed their specific claim and the illegal actions taken by the Colony of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.

The Tsilhqot’in Nation honours the resilience and persistence of the Williams Lake Indian Band to right the historical wrongs imposed by these governments. This victory contributes in not only changing the current narrative of injustice to justice but also affirms what Indigenous peoples of B.C and across Canada have been saying for over 150 years: this is our land.

Chief Joe Alphonse, Tribal Chairman, Tsilhqot’in National Government:

“This is yet another significant milestone and victory in the fight for recognition of Indigenous rights and land. The unprecedented and historical changes occurring now across B.C and Canada will help define the future landscape of politics and identity for all Indigenous peoples.”

Chief Russell Myers Ross, Vice Chair, Tsilhqot’in National Government:

“The Tsilhqot’in Nation has been witness to the evolution of the William decision to the SCC acknowledgement of Aboriginal Title. The SCC decision to restore the Special Claims Tribunal’s original decision puts faith back into the process. There is an enormous amount of work to ensure that Special Claims have a straight forward means of redress when there is an obvious breach by the Crown. As a leader, I want to express the importance of the decision for the Williams Lake Indian Band and their perseverance in continuing to seek justice for their community and Nation. Such high profile decisions from our region demonstrates how much work needs to be done to explain the history and shed some of the structural impositions to the colonial legacy here, in BC and Canada.”
