Union Gas Bringing Affordable Natural Gas to New Ontario Communities

Press Release

Kettle and Stony Point First Nation and Lambton Shores; Milverton, Rostock and Warburg; and the Delaware Nation of Moraviantown First Nation will benefit from much-needed energy savings.

CHATHAM, ON, August 11, 2017 – Union Gas has received approval from the Ontario Energy Board (“OEB”) for its Community Expansion Program application (File# EB-2015-0179). This expansion will provide new natural gas service to the communities of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, Lambton Shores, Milverton, Rostock and Warburg. The Delaware Nation of Moraviantown First Nation has received conditional approval pending funding from the Natural Gas Grant Program. Residents who heat their home and water with natural gas can save up to $1,500 on average every year, compared to using electricity, oil or propane.

“The Community Expansion Program will bring much-needed natural gas to these areas as well as a host of other new communities and provide long-term energy savings to residents and businesses,” said Mark Isherwood, vice-president, infranchise sales, marketing and customer care, Union Gas. “We’re pleased that the Ontario Energy Board recognized this need and approved our proposal.”

In late 2016, the OEB issued a new regulatory framework for extending natural gas service into new rural and northern communities that would otherwise be uneconomical under the previous framework.  Union Gas was first to submit an application for projects to extend natural gas service to these communities under the new framework. After extensive review, a decision in favour of Union Gas’ proposal as the natural gas service provider has now been granted. The approval represents the first wave of a multi-year expansion effort to provide natural gas service to more communities throughout the province.

Union Gas has been delivering clean and affordable natural gas to homes and businesses throughout Ontario safely and reliably for over 100 years, and will apply all of its expertise and experience towards these projects. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2017 and extend into 2018. Learn more about Community Expansion.
